Menu Plan

Plan! Plan! Plan!

If I was the PA on the popular Jim Carey movie Mr. Popper's Penguins I would be walking around saying "People : proper planning prevents poor performance. "

If you fail to plan you indeed plan to fail.

Meal planning for your family impacts on so many other areas including time and money.  How many times have you had to race to the shops to buy one missing ingredient for a meal? Or worse still, had to throw out rotten Veges that were never used up?

You will save so much stress and solve so many issues by planning your meals.

The prime time to plan your menu is on shopping day.

Here is a schedule to follow...

1) Write down a long list of 30+ meals that your family enjoys. Do some research throughout the year to continually update the list. Ask friends for the recipe when you enjoya meal they bake you.

2) Plan 7 meals..actually choose seven meals that create variety for the week. Or more depending on how often you grocery shop. Rather than having chicken three nights in a row have it one night followed by mince the next and vegetarian the one after.

Avoid being spontaneous. Choose a day of the week that you do your shopping and stick to it.

Write down the days of the week and list your meal chpices next to each day. Be proud of yourself for caring enough about yourself to plan ahead. Place the list somewhere visible.  I try and keep the front of my fridge clear so I stick mine on a less visible kitchen cabinet.

3) Write a grocery list based on the ingredients you are missing from your supplies make the meal. If you write down Tacos and you only have the box of Taco shells then add meat, sauces, cheeses, tins and freah vegetables to your list.

Repeat this procedure for every meal you are planning. Put thos list in your bag and head to the grocery store.

4) Now glance back over your budget to check how much you have available for your groceries that week. Or even better do that before you start the process so you can create a plan that works around your budget.  Avoid a seafood platter if your budget doesn't allow it.

5) Go shopping

6) Check your Menu Plan and your supplies.

Every night before you go to bed you will have a clear idea of what you are eating the next evening by checking your list. You can sleep peacefully knowing that your life is under control and wonderfully organised. And if your sister came to visit and ate all your tomatoes that you needed to make your masterpiece you will be able to pick some up in your lunch break the next day. Or if you are a SAHM and don't get that luxury go before school pick-up to avoid buying Oreos and Roll-ups too.

P.S. When you have this process flowing smoothly add lunch and then breakfast into the equation.

Where it all began

My journey to a more organised life has had its ups and downs. When I began having children my lack of routine and order revealed itself.  I prayed for help. I entered Koorong and found the Sandra Felton books. She started the group Messies Anonymous revolution.  I bought a new book every few months and referred back to them when ever I went off course.

Myorganised life began to take shape one ssystem at a time. Next The FlyLady offered inspiration to create routines to create a home that functions.

Moving forward seven years and my life is structured and a lot more predictable.  I have setmmorning and afternoon routines that are carried out like clock work
And I have various lists including the Kikki-K weekly checklist to keep me on track.  My diary os always on hand to jot down important tasks and events. Plus, I have folders for bills; grocery lists; goals; tax and reference.

I am even reaching the point where I can be excited to hear about The Minimalists and their journey to truly appreciating life separately to Stuff! But that's another story,  or should I say "post".

I challenge you to get organised today!

When you have tried it all before and nothing works

Live in the present!  Yes it is hard to do. And very difficult for First Born children.

If you have tried getting organised and it has not worked in the past then take my "Makes Me Smile" test. Go around the room and pick if ten items. One by one look at and touch the items. If the item is one that keeps you living in the present and creates happy feelings it can stay. If the item is only hanging around because it is linked to past memories let it go. Wait? No. Grab a black garbage bag and place the items in there. Similarly, if the item you pick up does not give you positive feelings and it is only in your hand because one day you (or a neighbour/friend/family member) "might" need it then place it in the bag. Keep going!! Fill that bag. And one or two more if needed!! Now do not delay. Take it and place it in the boot (trunk) of your car. Turn on the engine and drive to your nearest Donatation Bin/Centre like Vinnies or Salvos or your the favourite Goodwill of your choice.

Carry out this process every day! Go room by room. Start with smaller items and then delve into draws, cupboards, sheds and tool boxes. You will feel so good you will be ready to pass on your antique wardrobe and your Wedding dress.

Of course you could make money selling some of these items.  But if you are paid a good wage then why waste your valuable time. If you calculate the time you spend replying to 17 comments/emails and all the running around involved to earn $25 for your old spoon collection is it worth the money you made? Instead, give your items away knowing that they will go to a great new home;  the donation centre will earn money to help someone in need;  and you will move forward into the exciting new future awaiting you because of the lack of clutter in your life!

I have done it and the rewards are wonderful.

Organise for Daylight Savings

Kids crying, tummies rumbling. What is wrong??.

Adjusting to the change in time to start/end Daylight Savings is not as easy as turning your clock forward/ back an hour. For this reason, I do not believe you should expect babies or children to adjust in a single day.

In my experience allow a week to adjust. Even better, if you have young children and minimal early morning commitments then a two week time frame is optimum.

Start by taking your family back/forward in time by five minutes a day if you have two weeks, or ten minutes per day if you only have a week available. Older children will adjust okay within a week but babies prefer a longer time period.

Focus on your wake up time and bedtime for the first few days. Adjust by five/ten minutes backwards/forwards accordingly. Then a few days later, as well as wake up and sleep times, adjust breakfast and lunch by five/ten minutes too.  Finally, adkust lunch times and any snack times. And if there are any daytime naps they can be adjusted along the way with meal time adjustments.

So, day by day go forward/back by five/ten minutes in time on these various occasions. And then you will wake up on the morning where everyone else is totally in chaos with their routines life will continue oh so smoothly for you!!

Down Under

Being a wife and mother in Australia is an exciting rollercoaster. To keep motivated to organize my house I have been watching some YouTube favourites, sometimes numerous times a day. Those lovely ladies inspire me to mop my floors, shine my sink and even scrub my toilet.

Cleaning often comes secondary to organizing. When I have inspiration I clean.
But when I have free time I retidy my shelves, draws and cupboards just for fun!

Welcome

Welcome to the site with lots of creative and current information on keeping your home organised. Some photos will arrive soon.

My goal is huge. My aim is to become famous...I want to be on TV as the First Female organising expert.  I believe I have the skills and experience to help anyone, anywhere organise their space. I am great at looking at a space and figuring out how to make the stuff in it function!!

This week my morning project has been my wardrobe. Today I used two plain containers to store rolled up, colour-coded t-shirts on the top shelf in the walk-in wardrobe. I disgarded the old T-shirts that did not make me smile anymore and worked with resources already in my home to create a beautiful storage space!!

I look forward to sharing all my tips and tricks from the land of the Big Crocs.
